Before we continue in the early life and times of Dabney in Hillsdale, let me make a correction based on information that came to my attention after I had written the information on page 9. I had already mentioned all the family members, as I could see in the available records. I mentioned that there was Martha, who seems to have been the first daughter and oldest child of Dabney. Earlier I said that in the 1870 census, she was listed in the family, but in the 1880, she was not. In fact, she is listed in the 1880 census, even in the same house (dwelling). Here is the meat: Martha indeed got married as I suspected. I thought that she had moved away, but this is not the case. She is living in the same household as Dabney, but her new last name is Monroe (see yellow arrow below). Now age 22, she and her husband, John Monroe are living with her parents (Dabney and Sophia) and it looks like they now have 2 little ones, Sophia age 5, and Charles age 1. The younger child appears to be named after his uncle, (Dabney's son Charles). They are all in the same house, (Dwelling 201). The census-taker does not record that he/she has moved to the next house to begun recording new individuals until line 18 (Dwelling 202), and who do we already know lived next door? Look at the record below and see. Dabney's old friend, Milton Johnson.
